Rocket Grunt Guide for Pokemon Go: Counters and Lineups (November 2022)

To get Shadow Pokemon in Pokemon Go, trainers must defeat Team Go Rocket Grunts. Each of these villains has their own unique lineup, meaning you’ll need to know the right meters to head into battle in November 2022.

Since their debut in 2019, Team Go Rocket Grunts have been taking over PokeStops to steal items and battle trainers that speak to them. They can sometimes even be seen flying across the sky in Team Go Rocket hot air balloons.

Grunts may be the lowest-ranking members of the nefarious Team Go Rocket, but they can still prove to be a difficult fight. The key to success is knowing what types they are using and preparing a team that will exploit their weaknesses.

Fortunately, every Team Go Rocket Grunt is included the game will taunt you with a line of dialogue before each battle, and that dialogue will give you a clue as to what type of Pokemon they’ll be using, as well as the potential pool of Pokemon they’ll choose from.

The Grunt lineups shown below are correct as of October 31, 2022.

Pokemon Go Rocket Grunt Counter (November 2022)

There are many reasons to beat those Grunts in Pokemon Go. Not only do you get the chance to catch and purify a Shadow Pokémon, you also get a mysterious component part that you can use to fight one of Team Go Rocket’s leaders: Arlo, Cliff, Giovanni, or Sierra.

After April’s All-Hands Rocket Retreat event, there was a total of 20 different encounters you could face off against, but this has now been lowered 19 Rocket grunts total.

Below you’ll find each type of Team Go Rocket Grunt based on their taunts, along with information on their lineup and the best counters you can use to defeat them.

Are you afraid of psychics using invisible powers?

This grunt is used Psychic Pokemon, so the best counters are strong Ghost, Dark, and Bug Pokemon like Tyranitar, Weavile, Houndoom, and Haunter.

Here are the possible encounters:

Battle My Flying Pokémon!

As the taunt suggests, this Grunt will use Flying Pokémontherefore, the best counters are strong Rock, Electric, or Ice-types like Tyranitar, Electivire, and Abomasnow.

If you find yourself against this Grunt, they will use it Fairy-type Pokémonso Poison and Steel-types like Metagross, Roserade, Gengar, and Victreebel are the best counters.

Rolled up and ready to strike!

This grunt is used Poison-type Pokemonso the best counters are strong psychics and ground-types like Espeon, Mewtwo, Tyranitar, and Groudon.

Do not mess with us!

This grunt is used Grass-types, meaning the best counters are strong Fire-types like Charizard, Moltres, Entei, or Pyroar. Bug, Ice, Flying, and Poison types are solid backups.

Do you know how hot Pokemon Fire Breath can get?

As you might have guessed, this Grunt will use Fire Pokémon. That means the best counters will be strong water, rock, and ground types like Tyranitar, Blastoise, Vaporeon, and Rhydon.

Get ready to be shocked!

This grunt is used Electric-type Pokemon, so the best counters are definitely strong ground-types like Groudon, Rhyperior, Hippowdon, and Golem.

Come on, my super bug Pokémon!

As their taunting cues, this grunt will use them Bug type Pokemon. The best counters here are strong fire-types like Charizard, Moltres, Entei or Pyroar. Flying and Rock types are decent backups.

This grunt is used Ghost-type Pokemon, so the best counters are strong Dark and Ghost types like Weavile, Gengar, Haunter, and Darkrai.

Let’s rock and roll!

This grunt uses a number of Rock-type Pokémon, which means strong fighting types like Machamp are the best counters. Water, Grass, Ground, and Steel types can be used as a backup.

Normal does not mean weak

It goes without saying that this grunt is used Normal-type Pokémon. The best counters are strong fighting types like Machamp, Conkeldurr, Sirfetch’d, and Sawk.

This grunt is used Dragon-type Pokemon, so the best counters are strong Ice-types like Weavile or Glaceon. Fairy-types like Sylveon are also good backups.

The female version of this grunt is used Water Pokémon. The best counters to use are strong Plant or Electric types like Sceptile, Leafeon, Raikou, and Magnezone.

The male version of this water-based Grunt will only use Magikarp, but there’s a very small chance he’ll send out Gyarados as his final Pokemon. Electro-types are the best counters here.

This grunt is used Fighting-type Pokemon, so the best counters to use are strong psychic, flying, and fairy-types like Alakazam, Gardevoir, Togekiss, and Lugia.

This grunt is used Ground Pokémonwhich means the best counters are strong Water, Grass, and Ice-types like Gyarados, Venusaur, Mamoswine, and Weavile.

This grunt is used Ice Pokémon. The best counters are strong Fighting and Rock-types like Aggron, Machamp, and Tyranitar. Keep a Fire-type on your team for Snover and Abomansov as well.

This grunt is used Dark-type Pokemon, all of which are weak to Fairy-type attacks, so the best counters are strong Fairy-types like Sylveon, Togekiss, and Gardevoir.

This female grunt is difficult to predict as it uses a Mixture of Pokémon types. We recommend a team with a Fighting type like Machamp, an Electro type like Raikou, and an Ice type like Abomasnow.
