Until then scientists could not clearly understand the structure of the atom. Scientists had come to know that there is also a negatively charged particle inside an atom called an electron. But then the idea came in the mind of atomic scientists that how is the atom neutral even though the negative charge of the electron is present? There must be some positively charged particle present inside the atom to balance this charge. Later on, this positively charged particle was discovered which we know today as ‘proton’.

What is Proton? 

A proton is a positively charged particle present in the nucleus of an atom of hydrogen. It is present in the atom of every particle.

Who discovered protons? 

Many scientists had a hand in the discovery of protons. The first year 1815 about the proton, the English scientist William Prout suggested that all atoms are made of hydrogen atoms.

After that, in 1886 , German physicist Eugen Goldstein (Suzanne Goldstein) discovered the proton from Anode Rays and he said that the proton is a positively charged particle found in the nucleus of the atom.

He observed that positive rays have the largest mass in the case of hydrogen gas used in discharge tubes. 

Goldstein found that 

When we remove an electron from a hydrogen atom, we can produce a proton.

Which we can also write as 

H (hydrogen atom) → H+ (proton) + E- (electron)

Ernest Rutherford in 1911 which gave new direction to all scientists about protons. They found that in an atom all the positives are concentrated in the core of the atom and the volume inside the atom is empty.

He also said that the total number of positive particles is equal to the total number of negatively charged electrons present around it.

When was protons discovered? 

The whole proton was discovered by Ernest Rutherford in 1920.

What is proton used for?

Proton beam therapy uses protons instead of X-rays to treat cancer. The proton is a positive particle. Protons can easily destroy cancer cells.

Physical Characteristics of Protons Mass of Protons:

 The mass of a proton is equal to the mass of a hydrogen atom. Hydrogen atoms have one electron and one proton. Since the mass of an electron is considered to be very small, it can be said that the mass of a hydrogen atom is equal to that of a proton.

The mass of a proton is 1840 times that of an atom of an electron. We will learn further about the mass of electrons, protons and neutrons.

The charge of the proton is equal to the charge of the electron. A proton has a charge of 1.602×10−19 Coulomb.
